Common Dumpster Rental Questions & Answers

How to choose the right dumpster size

It is simple to choose from the different sizes of dumpster rentals. But, it can be hard to select the right size. Below are some guidelines to help you select the correct dumpster size for your project.

1. Measure Your Space
First, measure the space you need to place your new dumpster in. You’ll want to make sure that it will fit into your driveway or parking lot without blocking any driveways or walkways. If you have an empty garage, check with your local building department if there are any restrictions on what types of materials you can store in one.

2. Find Out How Much Waste Will Be Produced
Once you know how much waste you expect to produce during your remodeling project, you’ll be able to find a dumpster that fits your needs. For example, if you plan on remodeling your kitchen and producing lots of debris, you might need a 10-yard roll off dumpster. On the other hand, if you only anticipate making a few trips to the dump per week, you may only need a 5-yard dumpster.

3. Consider What Type Of Debris You Have
If you’re planning on remodeling your bathroom, you should consider whether or not you will be disposing of drywall, tile, wood, concrete, or something else. Some items like drywall and tiles must be disposed of at commercial dump sites, while others like wood and concrete can be recycled.

4. Check The Weight Limits
The weight limit of your each roll off dumpster size will depend on the type of material you’re throwing away. For example, if your home has a roof made out of asphalt shingles, you’ll probably need a 20-yard dumpster. However, if your house is made out of cinder blocks, you could use a 15-yard dumpster. And if your home is made out of brick, you’ll need a 30-yard dumpster. Keep in mind that the weight limits listed above are just guidelines; they don’t apply to all dumpsters.

5. Determine Where You Want It Placed
Your location will also determine the size of dumpster you’ll need. Most cities require you to put dumpsters in certain locations. In Philadelphia, for example, you’ll typically have to place them along the curb or street. Other areas may require dumpsters to be placed in a particular spot within your property. Make sure to ask your local government office where you need to place your dumpster before renting one.

How do you properly fill a roll-off dumpster?

Break Things Down
Whatever you’re going to put in your dumpster, break it down to its smallest state. This goes for foam, concrete, drywall and other items. The smaller you can break down these items, the more you will be able to place in your dumpster — which means greater value for your rental.

Flatten Boxes
If you’re working with cardboard removal, it’s highly important to flatten all boxes. This can be time-consuming and a general hassle, but it will save you a great deal of space in a dumpster. Grab a box cutter and make sure you’re reducing the boxes to their flattest state. Be careful when folding flattened boxes, too. If they don’t fold down to be completely flat, they can sometimes form pockets of unused space at the bottom of a dumpster.

Bulk at the Bottom
You might have to work with heavy items such as old furniture or fixtures, and other bulky objects. If so, place the bulkiest items at the bottom. When you have the bulky stuff at the bottom of your dumpster you can add smaller items. This brings us to our next point.

Fill the Gaps
Always fill in gaps as you begin to fill your dumpster. It’s easy when you’re in the midst of a significant removal project to work quickly and go too fast. But be conscientious throughout your project and pause every once in a while to make sure you are filling all gaps. For example, if you’re throwing away furniture, make sure you’ve filled in the empty areas formed by the legs with smaller items to be trashed.

Distribute Weight Evenly
Make sure you’re distributing weight across your dumpster. If the weight is not evenly distributed, the dumpster can shift during loading or transit, which can lead to a dangerous situation for all involved. Take time throughout your project to assess how well your dumpster is filling and to ensure the weight is properly balanced.

Don’t Load Too High
Lastly, make sure you do not load above the side wall of the dumpster because loose items can fly out during transportation. The loose debris can cause harm and possibly death if it causes a car accident or hits someone

Can a dumpster rental damage my driveway?

Damage such as scuffing, scraping and cracking is possible due to the large amount of weight sitting in one spot. However, we'll help you find a location that minimizes the likelihood of damage. You might also consider laying wood planks to protect your driveway.

Do I need a permit to rent a roll-off dumpster?

If you plan to put your container on any public street, sidewalk, or other type of property, a dumpster permit is not required. These permits are often called street or right of way permits. They can be issued by your local public works department or the building department.

If you are placing your dumpster in your driveway or a privately owned space, you will not need a street permit. If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, you may also need permission from them before placing a dumpster on a residential street.

What is not allowed in a roll off dumpster?

While you can toss most household junk and construction debris in a roll off dumpster rental, a few restrictions apply. Usually, this is because some items must be handled separately from other debris for environmental or safety reasons.

The list below shows items typically not allowed in a dumpster and explains why they’re prohibited. Restricted Items include:

  • adhesives
  • car batteries
  • fluorescent lightbulbs
  • food waste
  • freon
  • hot water tanks
  • household cleaners
  • ink & resins
  • oil, fuel & propane tanks
  • paint and lacquers
  • railroad ties & telephone poles
  • tires

Hazardous Waste

  • flammable or ignitable waste
  • corrosive waste
  • reactive waste
  • toxic waste
  • biohazardous or infectious waste

What can go in a roll off dumpster?

A roll-off dumpster can be used to dispose of most household, construction, and remodeling junk. Some areas may not allow all types of items to be placed in one container. They will need to go to different landfills, transfer stations, or recycling centers. This table shows you what materials are generally accepted and what type of roll off you should rent to toss them.

Residential Dumpsters
Household Junk, Boxes of junk, tables, chairs, bookshelves, desks, flooring materials, pots and pans and toys.

Construction Dumpsters
Remodeling Debris, Lumber, drywall, plaster, siding, scrap metal, countertops, cabinets, vanities.

Roofing Dumpsters

Items That Vary by Landfill and Recycling Centers

Yard Waste - Yard waste generally is acceptable. However, there are some places that do not allow organic waste in the landfills. Additionally stumps cannot exceed a diameter of 3 feet and trees should not be more than 1 foot in length. See if we offer a yard waste dumpster in your city to get rid of your organic materials.

Dirt - Dirt often requires its own dumpster because it can be reused. As a result, we may not have a dirt dumpster available in every city. If landfills won’t accept your dirt, consider trying to sell it.

Appliances - The majority of appliances can go into a roll-off dumpster. But, certain landfills could have limits on how many white goods they allow. Additionally, any appliance that requires Freon, such as a refrigerator or air conditioner, will require a technician to remove the Freon and dispose of it before the appliance can be safely accepted.

Electronics - Some states have banned e-waste from landfills. Even if you’re in an area where electronics are accepted, there may be some restrictions to the number or type of devices accepted. For example, you may be able to toss two electronic devices, but tube TVs are completely banned.

Upholstered Furniture - All furniture and mattresses can be accepted in the United States. Many areas will require you to wrap your upholstered furniture with plastic. Some places charge extra for the removal of the frame.

Heavy Debris - The disposal rules for heavy debris, such as concrete, brick, block and asphalt, vary the most. Only certain heavy materials will be accepted in specific containers. Others will take all heavy debris into a single dumpster.

Our team will review these rules with you so you know what to expect in your area.To find out if we accept these materials near you, give our team a call.

What is the biggest dumpster available to rent?

We have a 40 Yard dumpster. We offer multiple options for customers who have projects that generate more than 40 cubic yard of waste.

How soon can you deliver a dumpster?

We can generally provide prompt delivery, same day delivery, or next day delivery. However, sometimes inventory is limited so its always to schedule your delivery in a time frame of 2 to 3 weeks before your project is scheduled to start.
